Florida hurricanes are a real part of living here, and it's worth being straightforward about that. Sarasota and Manatee counties have seen direct impacts in recent years, including Hurricane Ian in 2022 and Hurricane Milton in 2024. What makes Florida different from a lot of coastal areas is the warning system: the National Hurricane Center tracks storms days before landfall, giving residents 48 to 72+ hours (often more) to prepare, secure their home, or evacuate if needed. Newer homes built to Florida's post-1996 hurricane building codes, impact windows, and reinforced roofs also hold up dramatically better than older construction. Being prepared isn't about fear, it's about having a plan, a supply kit, and knowing your evacuation zone before you ever need them.

Know Your Evacuation Zone
Sarasota and Manatee counties publish zone lookup tools by address. Know yours before hurricane season starts, not during a warning.
Build Your Kit Early
Water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a first aid kit — stocked before June 1, not the week a storm forms.
Protect Important Documents
Keep copies of insurance policies, ID, and deeds in a waterproof container or digital backup.
Photograph Your Home
Take photos/video of your home and valuables before hurricane season for insurance documentation.
Have a Pet Plan
Not all shelters accept pets. Know which local shelters or hotels do, and keep a pet supply kit ready.
